Nikon

As a photographer, I have long inhabited the role of the craftsman: a constant negotiation between the client’s brief, practical constraints, and my own visual intent, all converging toward a finished object. At the FISU World University Winter Games 2025, however, my presence in Turin as a guest of Nikon Italia came with a single directive: blank paper.

The structure slowly emerged as I found my axis in the study of movement, choosing to strip the athletes down to essential graphic elements. Points, lines, trajectories, forms echoing Kandinsky’s Point and Line to Plane, seeking a compositional equilibrium reminiscent of Mondrian. This abstraction was tempered by a monochrome palette and sculptural restraint inspired by Herb Ritts’ work, where bodies become geometry and light does the talking.

Ice skating revealed itself as the clearest embodiment of this vision. Here, simplicity, velocity, and fluidity coexist in perfect tension. The discipline unfolds as a visual score: light slicing through space, shadows anchoring motion, broad gestures resolving into delicate tonal modulations. Each frame becomes less a document of performance and more a study in rhythm—movement distilled, reduced, and finally, made silent.
